Child Care Curriculum

Our Curriculum

At Character Montessori, we believe every child deserves a strong academic foundation without the usual pressure that often accompanies it. We are committed to nurturing strong character, creativity, and the confidence children need to flourish in life. Rooted in Prof. Thomas Lickona’s 30 years of research in character education and inspired by the Montessori approach, our curriculum supports the growth of both the mind and the heart.

Children learn in mixed-age classrooms, a hallmark of Montessori education. This unique setting encourages empathy, collaboration, and leadership, as younger children learn from older peers and older children develop responsibility by guiding others.

Core Curriculum

English for Thinking

At Character Montessori, we go beyond traditional reading lessons. In English for Thinking, children learn to express themselves clearly, think critically, communicate confidently, and develop strong character; skills that go far beyond reading and writing.

Our exclusive Character Readers, a series of 30 sight-word books by Grace Yong, build vocabulary, fluency, and reading confidence. Through these stories, discussions, role-play, and purposeful writing, children learn to reason, share ideas, and listen attentively, all while seeing themselves reflected in the books they read.

Following Montessori language principles, children explore letters, sounds, and words using hands-on materials like sandpaper letters and movable alphabets. These sensory-rich tools make learning tangible, fun, and meaningful.

Our Character Readers are at the heart of the Character Building Education Model, inspired by over 30 years of research by Prof. Thomas Lickona, guiding children to grow not just academically, but as thoughtful, confident, and compassionate individuals.

By fostering academic excellence, confident communication, and character integrity, English for Thinking prepares children to thrive in school and beyond.

Chinese-Without-Tears

Language learning should be joyful, not stressful. Chinese-without-Tears is an in-house programme developed by our founder, Grace Yong, who collaborated closely with a Chinese Studies researcher from NTU to design a curriculum that is both engaging and effective for young learners.

Rooted in Montessori principles, children learn Mandarin through hands-on, sensory-rich materials such as movable characters, tactile cards, and object-based activities. By interacting with the language in a concrete and meaningful way, abstract concepts like strokes, pronunciation, and word formation become easier to grasp and remember.

Children are also introduced to Mandarin through songs, rhymes, storytelling, and interactive games. Instead of rote memorisation, they experience the language in context, helping them build confidence, spark interest, and develop a genuine love for Chinese culture.

By creating a low-pressure, playful environment, children grow in fluency while embracing bilingualism with ease. The programme combines research-backed methods and Montessori-inspired learning to ensure every child progresses confidently, joyfully, and independently.

Math-Without-Tears

At Character Montessori, mathematics is more than numbers, it’s a hands-on journey of discovery. Math-without-Tears uses Montessori materials such as number rods, beads, and counters, allowing children to see, touch, and manipulate concepts rather than memorise abstract formulas.

Through interactive activities, children explore counting, patterns, operations, and working through challenges at their own pace. These sensory-rich experiences help them build a strong conceptual foundation, making math logical, enjoyable, and meaningful.

By encouraging exploration, experimentation, and self-correction, Math-without-Tears nurtures not only numeracy skills, but also critical thinking, independence, and confidence, giving children the tools to approach future challenges with curiosity and ease.

Practical & Sensorial Discovery

Practical & Sensorial Discovery lies at the heart of the Montessori approach.

In Practical Life activities, children practice self-help skills such as pouring, dressing, sweeping, and caring for plants. These exercises strengthen fine motor coordination, independence, and responsibility, while giving children a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence.

In Sensorial Discovery, children engage all five senses through activities that explore textures, shapes, colours, sounds, and smells. By sorting, grading, and classifying objects, they develop concentration, observation skills, and cognitive reasoning, laying the groundwork for math, science, and analytical thinking in later years.

As part of this programme, children also participate in weekly cookery lessons. These sessions allow them to explore ingredients, follow simple recipes, and practice safe food preparation. Beyond learning practical skills, cookery lessons foster patience, focus, creativity, and teamwork, while giving children a sense of accomplishment as they enjoy the results of their own creations.
Together, these activities provide a rich, hands-on learning environment where children grow holistically, gaining independence, focus, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Science, Cultural & Bilingual Project Work

Children are natural explorers, and our Science, Cultural & Bilingual Project Work harnesses that curiosity through experiential, inquiry-based learning. Rooted in Montessori principles, children engage in projects that combine science, culture, and bilingual language development, allowing them to learn through observation, experimentation, and reflection.

From studying plant growth and simple experiments to exploring traditions and celebrations from around the world, children learn to ask questions, investigate, and collaborate. Projects are designed to be bilingual, weaving English and Mandarin seamlessly into the learning process, so children not only acquire knowledge, but also strengthen language skills in meaningful, contextual ways.

This programme nurtures critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving, while fostering curiosity, empathy, and cultural awareness. By encouraging children to explore the world actively and collaboratively, they develop a deeper understanding of both themselves and their surroundings, preparing them to be confident, thoughtful, and globally aware learners.

Enrichment Programmes

At Character Montessori, we believe enrichment should be accessible to every child. All our afternoon enrichment programmes are included in the school fees at no additional cost, so children can enjoy a wide variety of experiences without the need for extra classes or expenses.
Artspiration

Our signature arts programme, Artspiration, allows children to unleash their creativity and imagination across both visual and performing arts. From painting, crafts, clay work, papier-mâché, and 3D figurines to recycled-material projects, children explore self-expression through hands-on art-making.

As part of Artspiration, children also enjoy Music Appreciation (Piano). In playful, engaging sessions, they are introduced to rhythm, melody, and harmony while learning simple tunes. These activities strengthen concentration, coordination, and listening skills, while nurturing a lifelong love for music.

Together, these experiences help children build confidence, patience, and problem-solving skills, while fostering creativity and a sense of pride in their own accomplishments.

Chinese Speech & Drama
chisnd

In Chinese Speech & Drama, children bring language to life through storytelling, role-play, songs, and skits. This programme strengthens Mandarin articulation, comprehension, and self-expression, while boosting public-speaking confidence and stage presence.

By combining performance with interactive learning, children not only practice language in context, but also develop communication skills, creativity, and the ability to express ideas clearly, skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Budding Botanist

Budding Botanist is an engaging, hands-on Sustainability and Urban Farming programme specially designed for preschoolers. The programme’s objective is to nurture a love & awareness for nature and healthy living by introducing young children to the wonders of growing their own food in conjunction with (building/developing/promoting) eco-conscious and socially responsible individuals!

Through age-appropriate activities like recycling, composting, sensory gardening, and garden-to-table exploration, children will learn where food comes from, how plants grow, and how they can do their part to care for the environment in a fun and meaningful way.

Our programme supports core learning areas such as sensory development, science discovery, responsibility, patience, and fine motor skills, all while promoting sustainability and a farm-to-table mindset.
